Advent 4: The Love Candle

Responsive Readings:
Clementsport - 561
Deep Brook: 380

Scripture: 1 John 4:7-12
Sermon: Love
Bible Memory Verse for December:
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ [Romans 5:1]

Love Candle Readings:

Reader:
Today we light the Love Candle. At Christmas we celebrate the love God showed us by sending us HIs Son, Jesus Christ. “This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations”.”
[Matthew 12:17-18]

Pastor:
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
[1 John 4:7-9]

Reader:
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
[1 John 4:10-11]

[Light the Hope, Peace, Joy and Love Candles]

Everyone:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. [John 3:16]

THE THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT: JOY

Pastor- O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice!  Rejoice!  Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
Reader - Today is the third Sunday of Advent - the Sunday of Joy.
Pastor - Our joy is in God and in his son Jesus Christ.  Like
peace, joy is a gift from God.  It overtakes us and fills
us when we remember what God has done and what he has
          promised to do.
Reader - We light this candle today to remind us that Christ
came, and  is coming, so that all people might have a
rich and abundant life.  We thank God for the hope he
gives us, for the peace he bestows, and for the joy he
          pours into our hearts.
[Light the First, Second, and Third Candle]
Everyone: Let us pray -- O God of Joy, Emmanuel, send your light
into our hearts at this time.  Help us to be ready for
the time of Christ's appearing.  Fix our hearts and our
minds upon those things you have done and those you have
promised to do that we may have the joy you have
promised.  As we worship you, strengthen us so that we
may always do your will and so bless you and the world
          you have made.  Amen.

Scripture:
Acts 17:22-27
Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.

Why did Christ reject the painkiller?
Why was it necessary for Him to suffer?

And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.

Luke 24:25-27
25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

Cornerstone Sermon

Scripture:

1 Peter 2:4-8
4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,
“Behold, I lay in Zion
A chief cornerstone, elect, precious,
And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”
7 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient,
“The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone,”
8 and
“A stone of stumbling
And a rock of offense.”
They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.

Ephesians 2:19-22
That is why you are no longer foreigners and outsiders but citizens together with God’s people and members of God’s family. 20 You are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Christ Jesus himself is the cornerstone. 21 In him all the parts of the building fit together and grow into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 Through him you, also, are being built in the Spirit together with others into a place where God lives.

Matthew 21:42
Jesus asked them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
‘The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone.
The Lord is responsible for this,
and it is amazing for us to see’?

Scripture Memory Verse for August:
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
(Matthew 11:28)
